The living room area BEFORE.

Betsy Burnham, interior designer and owner of the LA-based firm Burnham Design transformed this dark, bare room into a sleek living area that mixes classic and modern pieces.

Dated, faux distressed floors were replaced with new wide-planked, walnut flooring in a dark chocolate brown and bare windows were dressed in tailored taupe drapery panels to add warmth without distracting from other design elements.

Wanting to keep the sophistication factor high, Burnham was thoughtful about each accessory and piece of furniture for the room —giving the neutral palette strong hits of color. A fretwork pattern designed from MDF molding and painted a satin white on the largest wall in the room was "game changing," adding texture and interest to the space.

The result? A livable space that's as practical as it is chic.
